RetroPie Arcade Cabinet from Scratch

Introduction

Building your own arcade cabinet is the ultimate retro gaming project. It combines woodworking, electronics, and software configuration into one satisfying build that will be the centerpiece of any game room.

Planning Your Cabinet

The first step is deciding on the cabinet style. Full-size upright cabinets offer the most authentic experience but require significant space. Bartop cabinets are a great compromise for smaller spaces.

Building the Frame

We'll use 3/4" MDF for the cabinet sides and 1/2" MDF for the control panel. These materials are affordable and easy to work with using basic tools.

Installing Controls

Authentic arcade controls make all the difference. We'll use Sanwa joysticks and buttons for that genuine arcade feel.

Configuring RetroPie

RetroPie turns your Raspberry Pi into a powerful emulation station. We'll configure it for optimal performance with CRT shaders.

Next Steps

Add marquee lighting, speaker upgrades, and consider coin door mechs for the full arcade experience.
